Robert E. Howard has had a biography problem.
The first full biography of Robert E. Howard was DARK VALLEY DESTINY by the de Camps. That book suffered from many of the same problems as L. Sprague de Camp's earlier biography of H. P. Lovecraft: a determination to make the facts of Howard's life meet de Camp's image of Howard as a man and a writer - and it wasn't a great image. A solid read and will make a great reference book for the Howard enthusiast. It may not be as entertaining as Mark Finn’s Blood & Thunder, but I have room on my shelf for both.
I’ve encountered a few fans in fan world that won’t read this, loudly proclaiming Finn’s book is better. What an open minded opinion, “I have not read this, but THERE CAN BE ONLY ONE!!”
Silliness. There can be two, three, seven, Hell, as long as an REH book is well written and offers something, there can be a million.

I thought the biography sections (Chapters 1-12) were WONDERFUL. I learned things. I got a better understanding of things, and it felt "real." Several portions of the book approached genius in the way it was written, showing true artistic flair. Chapter 13, which discusses a handful of stories through the lens of REH's life and influences, was insightful.

I very much enjoyed Renegades and Rogues. I think it accomplishes what it was meant to be, which is a well-researched, fact based account of Robert E. Howard's life. Furthermore, through it's clarity, patience with details and interest in people and places, it seems the true ordinary and extraordinary life of Howard can shine, without having to amplify or twist what is known. It is an excellent reference book to go back to whenever something needs to be verified.
