I just finished reading this for the second time and I thoroughly enjoyed it, more so than the first time. This is a top tier Conan tale that Robert E.Howard wrote, definitely one of my favourites. Howard was on his top form with this one. I'm pleased that I revisited this yarn for Cimmerian September 2025. Cimmerian September is something that Book Tuber Michael K. Vaughan started a few years ago, its great fun to participate in. ...more

Reading the lavishly illustrated Donald Grant edition of Queen of the Black Coast (and Vale of Lost Women) at the same time as I am reading Swords of the North, I am struck by the same basic theme - that of an overriding doom that man can only strive against temporarily. "'There is no hope here or hereafter in the cult of my people,' answered Conan. 'In this world men struggle and suffer vainly...'"
