Very good. I had to read one of the masters of American noir, and Chandler was a name that kept popping up. The dialogue is sharp, the descriptions very succinct and clear, and the mood is kept low-key all the time. Marlow is also a private eye I can get behind as a character. He does things his way, but it has its own honor code.

I adore Chandler's prose! The number of quotable lines in The Big Sleep is ridiculous. A bit disappointed in the audio versions, as I tried two different narrators and neither conveyed the spark of Chandler's writing, IMO. ...more

Hardboiled noir! Some credit Chandler with inventing the genre; regardless, he is certainly one of the best at creating a "black-and-white" atmosphere. The plot had a lot of twists and turns and a lot of sketchy people to keep up with.
