This is one of the best books I've ever read. Smarsh's incredible family with a spritz here and there of well-placed sociological nuggets has renewed my faith in non-fiction; it's a genre I tend to avoid because it can get a little textbooky, but this was wonderful. As someone who lives (quite literally) in the same area as this story, tales like these are recognizable - it's so heartening to see them broadcast to a national level.
