This is the first book in a while that I haven't written in as I was reading. It was pointed out to me that maybe that is because it is written so smoothly, that specific lines don't jump out at me - that there are no moments of "sugar on top." The whole book is striking.

This is one of the greatest books I have ever had the pleasure of reading.
When Octavia Butler was made into a Google Doodle earlier this year, it reminded me that I hadn't read anything by her yet. And my darling coworker and Goodreads friend Liz Webb read maybe six or eight books by her in February alone to celebrate Black History Month.
So when I was perusing through Libby and saw this was available to read immediately, I jumped on it.
