Honestly, I could've fit this book into three or four different categories. I could've used her previous novel "Salvage the Bones" as well. Both are beautiful works of literature. There's a reason Jesmyn Ward is the only woman, so far, to have won two National Book Awards (putting her next to names such as Bellow, Faulkner, Malamud, and Updike).
