Dune Messiah, the follow-up to the venerated Dune, is not required reading for fans of the original. But I highly recommend that people read it, you'll be thankful you did. In this novel, Herbert fleshes out many of the themes and threads he established in Dune. Whereas Dune was about Paul Mohadib coming to terms with his "terrible purpose" and accepting the role that necessity and generations of plotting have forced on him, the sequel shows the consequences.
