Truly great fantasy fiction with a historical twist! The characters are real and dimentional, the lines of good and evil are blurred, and you find yourself wondering, "who is the good guy, anyway?"
This series is not for everyone nor was it intended to be which I am grateful for. I generally don't like "door stopper" novels, but I'm making an exception here.

This is the second novel in A Song of Ice and Fire, and just as good as the first (A Game of Thrones). There are four kings in the land, all vying for the Iron Throne, as well as Daenerys Targaeryon across the sea, trying to build up her strength in exile and come back to Westeros to claim the throne for her own. It has been a decade or two-and-half ago since I really dug into the fantasy genre and I half expected not to enjoy it as much anymore as I did in my youth. But I was wrong. The writing is -if you are a hardened literature reader- rather sparse, but that shouldn't matter. This genre is about unrolling a story; building a history if you will.
