What Members Thought

Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell is a fascinating book and one that took me a long time to read. It's a large novel, but beyond that, the prose was more dense than what I commonly read. The best way that I found to describe the writing style was to compare it to a modern day take on Dickens. I'm sure that this was partially influenced by the 19th Century English setting, but there were other elements throughout that I felt had a decidedly Dickensian flavor to them as well.

When this first came out I made it about halfway through before giving up, now I have finally read all of it and I am so glad to have done so. Brilliant. A complete and totally believable world that fits English Magic so absolutely into English history that you almost forget this is a fiction. Loved it.
