It is difficult to approach this book without thinking about the excellent film adaptation, and certainly as I read it I had Kate Winslet and Ralph Fiennes in my mind. It is a very moving and uncomfortable story; an uncomfortable initial love affair, with far reaching consequences for both parties; followed by disturbing revelations from the Holocaust and ultimately with a disquieting section based around the redemption (or not) of a war criminal. Usually I prefer books where I can connect with at least one character, but I believe, in the case of this book, that the disconnect was intentional. The philosophical questions and moral complexities could only be examined by a reader who was not emotionally involved. Is it possible to understand someone's actions while also condemning them?
