This is the story of Lily, living in China in the 19th century. We learn in detail, about all the customs and rituals of this culture. We try to understand foot-binding, we try to understand the worth of the women. Lots of it is hard to understand. But one thing is certain, and that's the bond that Lily and her friend Snow Flower have and how they help each other through so many unbelievable things.

It took me a long time to become invested in this story. For the majority of the book, it just felt like another long, sad tale of the endless misery that Chinese women faced during the late 1800’s. Don’t get me wrong. These are extremely important stories to tell. But there has to be something that sets a novel apart from those that have already been written. I wasn’t seeing that. I was sure it was a 2 star read.
