I didn't love this book. I liked it--kind of. I put off reading it because I thought the idea of using Death as the narrator was too contrived, but as it turns out, I liked that part and found it interesting. It worked. In this book, Death is almost simpatico. The thing I didn't like about this book -- for all the critical acclaim of it being "haunting" it wasn't so for me. I did not find the characters compelling. I was not left as disturbed by the events within the book as I was with other Nazi Germany-set book, fictional or actual. But, never have I ever, and probably never will forever be moved as much as I was by one particular part of the book. And that is: The Word Shaker.

I couldn't put the book down.
Death as the narrator totally hooked me. Learning about the war from the perspective of the Germans also made me like the book more. It was an amazing story with very interesting and loveable characters. I really miss reading about the characters and their lives the most. Overall, I think it's a heart warming and exciting book/story. Definitely a must read if you're interested with WW2 as well. ...more
