This is simply a masterpiece. It tells of a family's travail's in China, but, for that matter, it could be any family struggling through tough times, trying to put food on the table. It takes the reader through all the stages of a man's fight; to sustain his family, to a measure of financial success, and finally to the end, where his spoilt kids don't appreciate all he's struggled through and are preparing to sell the good earth he sweated so much for after he dies. Haphazard choice of stars but well worth the read. This was my introduction to Buck. I studied Mandarin and wish I had read Buck before the language training. Buck shows how closely the people are tied to the land and to their families. As time rolls on, the land remains and continues to bless the people.

Finished it in one weekend. It was such a powerful story about the life of a man; his journey from the day he got married till the last few moments before he died. I couldn't put it down, it was fascinating to read his journey, his relationship to his wife, and children and the complexity of life.
