I would have given this book five stars, but the last 100 pages or so drag somewhat. Leah's chapters predominate, and they're primarily just long verbal spasms of political outrage against the American government's treatment of Angola. Yes, America's behavior was disgusting. But Kingsolver did a much better job showing us that, rather than telling us that by using Leah as a mouthpiece, in the previous 5/6ths of the novel.

This is another one of these books that makes me so glad to be a reader. The Poisonwood Bible took me on a journey to the continent of Africa, more specifically The Congo" in the late 1950s early 60s.

Barbara Kingsolver has written an epic story not of only an American missionary family but juxtaposition to a turbulent time in the "Congo" history.
