Date finished is rather iffy but I read it to find out what significance the "ashes" might have. Never did get a clear idea of that but I found it to be a depressing read. Apparently the life of most Irish children has been miserable for at least a hundred years, having just readA Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man. Details differ of course but it is clear that the Catholic Church played a major role in the formation of their attitudes toward life. This book shows more of the living condition

One of the greatest thrills of my life was getting to go to Limerick, Ireland and visit the Frank McCourt Museum. There I saw Angela's Ashes come to life. McCourt came from the direst poverty and it is his life that he writes about in this amazing book.
