We learn about the young veterinarian just as he graduates his coursework and follow him to the highlands for his first introduction to the real world. He endures the cold and the filth with the strength of a trouper and matures as he becomes an independent and trusted member of rural community that depends on his skills in keep their herds healthy. It is a cheerful book from a man who loved his work and the country woman he married.
