I haven't read these in what seems like forever. I used to read them every year, I've loved the books since I first read them as a pre-teen. While the movie adaptations are great, it's wonderful to read the books and find all of the things that they took out including the whole Tom Bombadil episode. ...more

I've put this off for far too long. I began The Fellowship of the Ring with high expectations of course, what with its blockbuster movies and endless attention, especially now with The Hobbit about to be released soon. The beginning of the story is a bit slow, but of course, it has to give a lot of background information to set the scene, as it were. This book was fantastic the second time too, I love the minor details Tolkien includes. Ever wonder what happened to the horses they set loose? He tells you in the books. So much detail, and so many interesting songs and verses. Tolkien was the First Master of fantasy, and I especially love how he treats magic in his world. To the elves, magic is just their way of life, it's not as if they even have to try to do anything "magical," and Gandalf never throws fireballs or does anything too overtly
