I admit, after all the hype I've gotten about this book, or the series as a whole, I expected I'd be devouring this in a matter of days! Unfortunately, both for me and for my friend Natalie who has been badgering be about reading this since two years ago, I found myself often unable to get through more than ten pages at a time.

Reading the reviews here this is obviously a marmite series of books. Reading this for the second time I still fall into the camp that love it. I find the characters convincing, the history and mythology of the world enthralling and the landscape detailed and vivid. I have no problem with the often prejudiced attitudes displayed by characters in the book, as not only does the book not seek to approve of these (in fact it often shows them to be baseless and foolish) but it also seems sensible tha ...more

I wanted to read this series because I loved the HBO series. Now I have completed the first, A Game of Thrones. It was wonderful! The characters are well-drawn and really evoke my interest. The structure of the book is such that the chapters are not numbered, but each named for a character, and we see the events from that person's point of view and their own thoughts and reactions. which allows us to become even more vested in them.
