Shelves: classics, must-read, re-read-more-than-once
I love this book! Reading it has given me a new appreciation for the history of the period and made me think about a lot of things. It is so rich in life! It has so many moving scenes that will stir your heart! Dialogues are so intellectually engaging! It is a beautiful blend of penetrating ideas and deep emotions, of contrast and harmony. Such a masterpiece!

If you read it, you will feel as if you are there feeling the happiness and pain of the characters. I won't stop recommending this book to ...more

This book may be on my "read" shelf, but I trudged through 40% and then just lost the will to continue. As lovely and penetratingly insightful as some of the writing is, those few gems were too lost in a sea of superfluous and insanely long-winded description. Or we could just call it unnecessary crap, 'cause that's what it is.

I will, however, pick up where I left off after I buy the abridged edition. ...more
