This book is Conrad Richter's third book in the "Awakening Land Trilogy". It is also the book that provided his recognition with a "Pulitzer Prize". Although it is a fascinating book continuing the life of it's strong lead female characther Sayward, I thought that the first two books, particularly the first, "The Trees" were superior endeavors. This is the final book in The Awakening Land trilogy, which includes The Trees and The Fields. It's a brilliant series, and Sayward Luckett Wheeler is an unforgettable character. Too bad her youngest child, Chancey, was such a douche. Must've gotten it from Portius.
