Reason read: Asian Diaspora. Author Viet Thanh Nguyen is a Vietnamese/American author. Born in Vietnam and living in the US. This his debut novel is the story of an unnamed narrator who is an immigrant and a spy. The book covers many issues; immigrant, mystery, political, metafiction, dark comedic, historical, spy, and war.

I was loving this book until the last few chapters when it became too absurdist for me to willingly suspend disbelief or even find the black humor amusing. Too bad because it started so promisingly. Fine though for a first novel but as a Pulitizer Prize-winner, I had high expectations. Parts are not unlike "The Oprhan Master's Son." Definitely not for the faint of heart.

Wow. What a book. It takes a look at the Vietnam War from the eyes of a double agent, written in the form of a confession. This book won the Pulitzer Prize for Literature this year for good reason. This is not an easy book to read, and in fact several gals in my club would not place this book in the top ten of the year. I listened to the audiobook, which may have changed my experience of the book. I found the book to be surprisingly funny in parts. (RHS Book Club, September 2016)
