[close] I am a Brooklyn girl and a diver which was why I decided to read this book. It was slow reading but the details of the Navy Yard, the early dive suits and Egan's in depth descriptions of life at sea and the local life in Brooklyn kept me reading. This is a slow read and I don't know how many others would want to read this book. I did enjoy it, though.

This book was uneven, but for the most part I enjoyed it. It tell the story right before and during WW2, of a woman, Anna who becomes a diver for the navy in Brooklyn, her father, and Dexter,( the gangster with whom her father had an association). The most interesting parts were where Anna learns (and struggles against sexism) to dive, parts told from her father and Dexter's points of view less interesting. ...more
