Long, too long, but shot through with realistic characters and satiric humor. There are no heroes in this book. The manipulative and cunning Becky Sharp and the weak, kind hearted but not too bright Amelia Sedley are childhood friends, but seemingly from opposite ends of the moral spectrum. The book chronicles the hedonistic Becky's rise to high society, and though long winded, it manages to say much (that is current) about wealth and ambition while slipping in some witty humor.
