I enjoyed the first Fablehaven book, but to be honest, would not have put it in the same category as Harry Potter. However, I'm repenting of that now. The books get better and better, the adventures intensifying with each turn of the page. I won't give much away, but I want you to know that I have fallen in love with Fablehaven, and if you like Harry Potter-esque books, this series is for you. And it's not some copycat either. It is definitely wonderful and well-written in its own right.

The book begins with Kendra and Seth at home, just before summer break. A demon comes to their school and they become involved with a stranger to make him leave.
The stranger says that he is fighting the "Evening Star" and gets Seth to break into a funeral home to steal a relic, that will help preserve the Havens around the world. Seth is bitten by the relic, and it is later revealed that the statue will seek Seth until he is consumed.

We listened to this as a read aloud on our family road trip. It was great for those who had read the books before and those for whom this was their introduction into the Fablehaven world.
Seth and Kendra head back to their grandparents’ house and Fablehaven after some weird events at school and around town. Kendra can now see magical creatures without the milk due to the fairies in book 1. The Society of the Evening Star is in the rise and it’s hard to know who is friend or foe.
5 stars!

Actually 4.5 stars. I really liked it and thought the story was exciting to read.
I've got to get the next one to see what happens! It leaves you with a bit of suspense at the end. Who is telling the truth???
One of the things that did bug me about the book was the kid Seth...like seriously! He was rather annoying, but thankfully got better at the end and didn't annoy me that much. ...more

I think I might have enjoyed this one better than the first, which is amazing! We had a treat a few weeks ago to meet the author, Brandon Mull and enjoyed his stories of where his ideas come from.
The tale of preserving fantastical animals continues in Rise of the Evening Star, as the enemies to the preserve try to find the four keys to bring together ultimate power. Hurray! This volume of the series was much more interesting than the first one. I liked having more mystery in the plot and a twist at the end. Now I'm ready for volume three!

This book had some predictable elements, but maybe it would be less-so for the age group it's intended.

As good as the first book. Can't wait to read the third book.
