Maisie is a detective during the 1920’s. She doesn’t use any far fetched tactics to deduce information. It was enjoyable read and the author did a good job building the characters but the experiences are not very detailed and the romantic relationship is sparse. I’m not one to rely on a heavy romantic theme but I wanted to learn more about it than just that they went to dinner.

Maisie Dobbs is quite the brilliant sleuth. Not only can she solve a mystery, but she can help you manage the after effects. Maisie's intelligence, training, and experience make her wholly suited to her profession. However, experience comes with baggage. It will be interesting to see where that will take her.

I will no longer complain when female characters from the WWII era are full of "spunk", an irritating term. Because Maisie just wasn't. Sure she was smart. But she was so shy and reserved that I don't feel I knew her at all. I learned a few facts about WWII but they weren't very exciting facts. Maisie's flashback took up 3/4 of the book, leaving the mystery itself only 1/4 of the book. Very clean, though!

This book begins an extensive series that I have no desire to commit to, but it was fairly interesting on it’s own. Maisie is a fascinating character with many amazing gifts and inspired intuition that make her an excellent investigator. There was a lot of sadness as well as sweet and poignant moments and even though I am not typically one for mysteries, I found myself pulled into the story.
