Finally got around to reading this one. I love Maisie's character. She is a bright young woman who genuinely wants to help people. She's grateful to the people in her life who helped her become who she is and she wants to make a difference in others' lives. The book takes place in the 1920's but flashes back to when Maisie was a nurse during WWI. The book moves at a slow pace but the beautiful storytelling makes up for it.

After reading this, I am anxious to continue with the series. Throughout the first half or so, I felt the book was a bit predictable though enjoyable, and I found Maisie too perfect to be truly endearing. Fortunately, Winspear alleviated both of these concerns by the end of the book.
I was touched by Winspeare's portrayal of the relationship between parent and child, particularly of the parent's fear that their child will end up in a place where they simply cannot follow. I am also grateful to h ...more

Although Maisie Dobbs certainly falls into the mystery genre, it is much more than that. Like Alexander McCall Smith's 'No.1 Ladies' Detective Agency,' it is really just a wonderfully well-executed exploration of a particular time and place, using the mystery framework of order-from-chaos as its platform.
In the case of Maisie Dobbs, the place is London and the time is that oft-overlooked period between The Great War (WWI) and World War II. But really, it was a time of upheaval; when political, s ...more

4 and a half stars.
I really enjoyed the story that made the mystery less important than most mystery books. There is historical fiction going on here. It is appealing on many levels! I'm very pleased that we read this for my book group. ...more

Move over Agatha Christie, I think I may have a new favorite mystery writer. Although I can’t say this is the best mystery book I ever read, I LOVE Maisie. She’s charming and relatable. And I love Winspears writing style, well paced and unpredictable. I thought we were solving one mystery then we’re solving another, then the action hits. Wonderful, just wonderful!

I loved loved this book. A woman detective in the late 1920's in England has to revisit her past as a nurse during WW1 to solve a case. Can't wait to read the others. Clean.
