I went back and forth on whether I should give this four stars or five. My only issue with the book is that it took me a bit to get into it, but I recognize the need the author had to introduce so many characters. Middlemarch is very well written. I like the insights into why different people think the way that they do, and the strength of the female characters in such a male dominant setting. One woman, Rosamond, is a bit too strong. I found her fascinating because she was so sly and selfish th

I spent 3 to 4 weeks reading this monster of a book. I don't mind big books, I read my first big one in 8th grade. This however felt as long as it is.
The writing is impeccable. George Eliot is a master of the English language and it shows in this novel. I wish I could use words in the same manner and I realize the power that can be found in its proper usage.
For me that was the best part of reading it. It is a typical 18th century novel, with must exposition, and lengthy discourse. I can't say I ...more

This is one of those books that will last the centuries. Her ability to write with such precision and understanding of human nature is astounding and brilliant. This is why I think it will resonate with audiences forever. Her craft to help us reach outside of ourselves to see others perspectives and the godliness in all of us is how we incite change. The story line was also so intriguing, it took me a little bit to get into the story but then I was hooked and caught myself wanting to go back soo

This book has several delightful sections that I would give five stars, but it’s a bit long. It was a bit slow introducing all of the characters and only a few of them I liked right away. I really enjoyed the ending with all of the scandal and romances. This is a proper book written in the late 1800s and so there is nothing inappropriate. George Eliot’s writing is similar to Jane Austen’s and other classic writers. There a few of her descriptions that explain situation so cleverly and well, that

Even though this was very long, I loved it. I loved the characters and the story and even though I could have done with a little bit less of the politics, I am so glad I finally read it. I've been wanting to for a long time. It's often difficult for me to read classics, especially chunksters like this one, but I usually feel very satisfied when I'm done. I need to do it more often.

Great English classic literature. 28 hours of audio even on 1.5 speed was too long for me but she did a great job with her character development. Dorthea was definitely my favorite character. The audio reader was five star, she did an excellent job with changing her voice for the different characters.

It took a while to read but was well worth the effort. It's the kind of book which I'm sure would be even better the 2nd or 3 rd time around. I doubt that I will take the time to re read it. My loss.
