I love epistolary novels and usually read them in print, but this one was fine to listen to instead. It is a series of letters (only letters, nothing more) written mostly by Evelina to her guardian, the Reverend Arthur Villars, while she's vacationing with friends and relatives. Her travels take her to London for a while, and she has many experiences that are challenging for a beautiful 17 year old girl without the protection of a father and mother. After reading Jane Austen’s bookshelf, I thought it would be fun to read some of the very same books that Jane read. I’ve got some Maria Edgeworth on the shelf.
I found it was the see why Jane came out on top. Her books are better.
But, I was happy for Frances that her book did so well that she was able to purchase a home for her family. And she survived a mastectomy without anesthesia so the lady deserves everything positive she can get.

This book was way over the top, but for being written in the 1700's maybe it was just right for them. If so, what a way to live! That's what I enjoyed the most about reading this story-reading a romance from 250 years ago. ...more

Predating Jane Austen in a similar genre, but definitely not witty or as intelligent as Austen. At the same time, it is an interesting portrayal of the era from a women's point of view. ...more
