I am loving the character of Lucy Snowe. The verbal sparring that she and Ginevra get into is hilarious.
Poor Lucy, all she really wanted was someone to love and to take care of. She was just so lonely. You could certainly see the grief from Charlotte Bronte's life seeping into the novel, poor girl. I thought it was a very wise book, I enjoyed it.
My problem was not having a French translation. You are able to figure out most of it, and still get what is going on, but I kept wondering what youth

I read this book when I was in my twenties and thought it was one of the best books I had ever read. What I am wondering now is, have I lost most of my brain in my old age and just didn't understand it this time through? This book was a hard read; however, very worth it in the end. I did like Jane Eyre better, but this book was masterfully written. I wish the heroine, Lucy Snowe, would've been stronger. This was an interesting book to read. Kind of slow moving at first, complex characters, a very subtle and introspective writing style. The main character Lucy was so interesting to watch. At one moment she was so mature and withdrawn, at the next, she was a nervous wreck full of pent up energy. And the men and women in her life are also complex, interesting people. It's a melancholy story, but it kind of sucked me in and gave me lots to think about. ...more

Jane Eyre is one of my favorites, so I was super excited to read Villette. Unfortunately, I found Villette to be really slow with a lot of tedious details that didn't seem to further the story, or even contribute to the development of Lucy's character. And the ending? Ugh. ...more

I hate to say this but I was bored out of my mind and didn't make it very far. I gave it a valiant effort but just couldn't get into the story. ...more
