I loved this short, Newbery Award winning book. It's about a homeless boy in the mid-12th century and how he works hard to overcome obstacles to achieve a goal. In the beginning, Tree-ear becomes apprenticed to a master potter who lives in his village. Throughout the next year and a half he learns not much of pottery, but much about kindness and the value of patience and perserverance. Great book.

Spoiler Alert & warning: I like this author; she writes some interesting children’s/young teen historical novels. Overall this is a good story, but beware that there is a moment when the young man contemplates throwing himself off a cliff. Otherwise this story teaches principles of hard work, perseverance, positive independence, and endurance.

A bit of a slow start, but otherwise a beautifully written and moving story of an orphan boy in 12th century Korea who becomes an apprentice to a potter. A Short and quick read, good lessons and points to consider without being too preachy. Thoroughly researched; great portrayals of the main characters.
