I was caught in the magic of this book. It was a poignant and heart-breaking love story. A story on the importance of open communication, tolerance, and seeing there are two sides to every issue. The title describes it well as bitter sweet.

It was also eye-opening about the bitterness and hatred that surrounded those of Japanese decent here in America during World War 2. I remember learning about it in school, but I never did any critical thinking about it until reading this book. It begs the qu

It's 1942 and Henry Lee attends a predominantly white school where the kids bully him for being Japanese despite the button his dad makes him wear that says "I am Chinese." When he falls in love with a Japanese classmate, he will risk his own safety and his relationship with his parents to help her and her family.

This story switches between Henry Lee in 1942 and Henry Lee in 1986, a recent widower who is reminded of the girl he once loved.

Rated G.

Loved it. I could relate to so much of this book, especially being married into the Japanese culture. Highly recommended.

What a sweet story! I did not know much in regards to the Japanese containment camps during World War 2, and it was very interesting to read about them. I really appreciated the way the author told the story while teaching about something that is not taught in history classes in Junior High or High School. (It wasn't taught in mine.) ...more

I really liked this book. I love historical fiction and a good love story, so I was not disappointed. I loved the love story because it felt so innocent and true.

Loved it, and it ended perfectly for me! And I loved that the father/son relationship seemed to heal throughout the book. I like books where things get better.

A sleepy, sweet, piece of historical fiction. Akward in parts and plodding in places, but still informative and tender.

I really liked this book. Although it was mildly political, it had a great little love story set amid a dark time in U.S. history. Fully flushed out characters and plot. Well done. Pacing was a little choppy, and that's really my only complaint. I did feel sorry for Ethel, though. It's never fun playing second fiddle to a first love.
No swearing or sex or graphic violence. Very PG. Recommend to all.
