The Lost Hero (The Heroes of Olympus, #1) in Clean Reads

Reader thoughts: So, yes, the Lost Hero is nearly as good as the Percy Jackson books (it wasn't first person, though, but that was all that bugged me, basically), but it had a cliffhanger at the end to rival Catching Fire! Oh no! How can Rick Riordan do this to his readers?? I almost thought I would go insane if I had to wait 12 months for the sequel . . . but then I realized it would probably only be 11 months or so, and that seems more bearable for some reason.

Anyway, I liked the characters, but they seemed a bit too like characters RR has already used. Piper was a lot like Rachael, except a demi-God. Famous and rich parent, doesn't care about appearance, pretty anyway, important, yeah. Oh, and how could her voice be so powerful as to charm the wolves? They leap at her and fall asleep, ha!

Jason was cool, and his amnesia was well done.

Leo was probably my favorite. I liked the Hephaestus-fire power, although I did think it made him seem a little too powerful. Cool, though.

One thing I didn't quite like was the way the 3 main characters were kept deliberately clueless. Even when the reader could see what was going on in the story, the main characters couldn't. Also, people kept telling them, "Oh, you know what I mean!" when they didn't.

I have to admit, I didn't see the ending coming (I should have, but oh my I didn't think Rick Riordan could be so brilliant/cruel!). I saw it about five pages before the end of the book, when Hera made her comment. I nearly went into shock; it was so amazing (and yet awful, because it was such a big cliffhanger). Yet, I probably care more because I'm sort of in love with Percy, and so I think it's a bigger cliffhanger than most people would. (Oh, and I hope the next book is first person again!)

EDIT: the next books aren't first person, but they do include Percy.

Writer thoughts: 3 MCs can be a difficult balance, but RR pulls it off well. He knows who will be interesting and which scenes to tell from which pov. You want to be in the pov of the character in the most pain (or doing the most awesome magic). ...more

3.5 stars.. Jason shows up with no memory, but Leo thinks Jason is his best friend, and Piper thinks Jason is her boyfriend.

This was slow at parts, I remember loving The Lightning Thief so much more. I hope this series gets better. (Leap forward to Feb 2024,) It does not. I rounded up Book #3: The Mark of Athena 3.5 stars to 4 stars. I think the biggest difference is The Percy Jackson and the Olympians books were each about a new quest or adventure. I liked this book. It was fun, but I didn't love it like I had hoped to. Maybe I've just been away from the Fantasy Juvenile Fiction genre for too long. There didn't seem to be enough substance and I was left wanting something...BUT it was still an enjoyable read and I liked the characters a lot. The plot kept you interested and guessing and I will be diving right into the next book. ...more

I really enjoyed this book. I found it to be better than the Percy Jackson series (and I thought those were good). I got the vibe that Rick Riordan knows the end from the beginning with this series - that was lacking in the first couple of Percy Jackson books. It's nice to see a sequel series to have such a strong premise behind it instead of a forced storyline sequel which is just done as a money maker. This didn't have that feel at all.
