Wow! What a heart-wrenching story. It's hard to rate it 5 stars due to the subject matter, but the I loved the manner in which the story was told. I enjoyed how the author intertwined the 2 storylines, and she kept me guessing how they would be connected until the very end. What a sad story though! And to know that it was based on historical events. Hard to imagine! It's definitely a clean, good read for anyone who is looking for that type of book.

So this book was heartbreaking but the story had so many sub stories woven in to keep the reader's interest. I like the way it unfolded, getting the story from different characters. And it was interesting to find out that this is basically historical fiction on adoption and orphanages in the United States from the 20s to the 50s. I was disgusted to find out that Georgia Tann never had to face the charges against her because she died before everything was unearthed fully. The story was fiction bu

Went back and forth between a 4 and a 5 on this one. I actually started this book months ago, but had to return it to the library after only getting about a quarter to a third of the way through it. The story haunted me enough that I checked it back out, and once I started it again I couldn't put it down. The audiobook is done really well, BTW. Some of the horrors these children endured were absolutely heartbreaking, but I'm thankful that while the author definitely didn't gloss over them or shy

Opening line:
"My story begins on a weltering August night, in a place I will never set eyes upon."
This story was written so beautifully that I wanted to cry and cheer and throw something. The characters, settings, the story lines...all masterfully penned.
A favorite quote:
"A woman's past need not predict her future. She can dance to new music if she chooses. Her own music. To hear the tune, she must only stop talking. To herself, I mean."

Fantastic, engaging read. This story, held my attention, was engaging, and filled with emotion and raw human behavior. An eye opening novel that made me aware of the evil and wrong doings of adoption in this time period. But the way this book was written in telling the past story and concurrently telling the current story, where a bit of mystery and romance along the way and the one girls story touches at the heart strings. I kept looking for more time to read this story. I will most definitely

It is hard to give this book a rating because of its topic. anything to do w Kids is hard for me to read about. I was sick to my stomach the whole time reading it. I had to read it in very small sections. My heart broke w each page. I cringed with each new incident. It has made me hold my

I like books that go back and forth between the past and present to unfold a mystery. This is one of those. I also liked that the author could write about horrible things that happened without giving so much detail that you leave it feeling sick too your stomach. It was all tastefully done and ended on a positive note.
