I read this book as a kid and really liked it.

I re-read this book because I discovered it's actually the first in a series I never knew about so I had to refresh my memory before starting book two.

I've always thought this book was amazing. What really stood out to me this time as I read it, was the importance of learning through history. I liked this quote by the Giver when he is talking about memories he says, "I re-experience them again and again. It is how wisdom comes. And how we shape our future." Also...

I have read this book at least four times. It is set in the future in a society where people have given up freedom of choice, even things as simple as color or food, in order to avoid discomfort or strife of any kind. One boy, Jonas, is asked to become the next “Giver,” or keeper of memories. He discovers that his society isn’t the utopia it was meant to be. Great book for a book discussion group. It really makes you think--and the ending is open to interpretation.

One of my favorite books. I had to read this for a college class and write a paper on the many meanings. It is a great easy read.

I read this book when I was teaching 4th graders. I did not enjoy it and felt it was too dark for elementary school students.
