This juvenile lit book is a good introduction to some hard ideas, i.e. the importance of suffering in our lives and what could happen if a society attempted to eradicate it, self sacrifice, the importance of individuality and choices. The story is compelling and the characters are interesting.

Really liked this book but I want more.
Realized when I started that I'd read this before. I think because there were no surprises I didn't enjoy it as much the second time. But it is an interesting story. Perhaps it makes me appreciate more my boys' rebelliousness and tendency to shirk rules...nah let's not go that far.

A very interesting book written by a boy who lives in a society that has many choices taken from them, giving people more peace and less pain, but also less joy and more monotony. A different look at what our lives might be like with out all the things we complain about.
1994 Newbery. Rather terrifyingly disturbing kind of "wake up". Different is good. Love is paramount!
