How did I miss this classic young adult novel? It's a tale of a future world where everything is the same, the weather, the landscape, even the colors. It's easier that way. I read this in one sitting. I couldn't put it down and I keep thinking about it. It did leave me with the feeling like I was only scratching the surface. I don't know if that is because it is a young person's book or because I just need to read it again to see more. Maybe a combination of both. I have been meaning to read this book for a while now. I had always heard of it but never had any idea what it was about. It was interesting and very creative. It really made me appreciate the ways in which we are all different and for the agency that I have. The only downside was that the end didn't give me the closure I would have liked. I do recommend it as it is a quick easy read and gives you something to think about.

I don't know how I missed reading this book. It seems that everyone I know read it long ago. It is the story of a society of sameness. Everyone does the same thing. There is no color, no love, no deep emotions. Jonas, is elected to be the receiver of memories. He receives memories from the giver and learns about joy and happiness, but also misery and pain.

1994 Newbery. Rather terrifyingly disturbing kind of "wake up". Different is good. Love is paramount!
