Reader thoughts: I put off reading this book for so long. I knew I liked Shannon Hale's books and the other Bayern books, but this one just didn't sound interesting. I knew it would be about someone who could speak to trees (from the title, cover, and first couple pages). The other books included speaking to wind, fire, and water. How could speaking to trees be interesting?
Well, SH made it interesting. Plus, Rinna can do more than speak to trees. She's a people speaker. !! She could get her way ...more

Forest Born by Shannon Hale
Book Review by me, Emily
I want to be Shannon Hale. Wow. I love this book. The writing is stunning, powerful, and poetic. Furthermore, the plot is unique and intriguing. I know I'm totally gushing here, but I'm working on a fairytale of my own, and toward the end of this book, I looked up and told my husband, "I want to write like this."
Besides, she's just an awesome human. If you ever get a chance to hear her speak, she's hilarious. Check out my interview with her here ...more

Not my favorite Shannon Hale book, but definitely top three, and that is high praise. I love the way she writes strong female characters without going the trendy, young adult route. Rin is so endearing, you just pull for her to see her own worth. Though all her books are thoughtful, I thought this one to be especially so, and hope that my daughters saw all the lessons I did in it.

I thought I already wrote a review for this, but in case I didn't, here's a quick one. The first book and this last book are probably my favorite in the Books of Bayern series. I loved how introspective the main character is and how she fights to achieve and maintain a fine balance of being a good friend and being a person who takes advantage of others.

I had fun with this one. I wish I could have gotten my hands on it sooner after having read the other Bayern Books - I was trying to remember what everyone's gifts were and such. But, I loved it anyway. I love this series. I'm so hopeful to find another great series out there. I still have to say Goose Girl was my very favorite, but this was really great!

I am about 100 pages from being finished. I think this is my second favorite Bayern book after The Goose Girl.
Done. Most definitely my 2nd favorite. I loved Rin's character and the interaction between the "fire girls" was hilarious! I was smiling almost the entire second half. I want to go back and re-read the first three Bayern books. ...more

I would give the first half of the book a 3 but by the end it was a 4. This is the 4th book in the Books of Bayern series and I was beginning to find the plot a bit of a stretch, the main character not very likeable, and the writing a bit trite. But I kept on and by the end I was sucked in and couldn't put it down and wanted to read more.

This one was just okay for me. I felt bored throughout the book, and it lacked Shannon Hale's usual sense of humor. The book ended right when Rin's story should have started, and it took WAY too long to get there. I'm hopeful that there will be a sequel and that it will be more exciting!
