What Members Thought

I don’t think I’ve ever read a book that captured the character’s age and voice so well! I loved everything about this book, from the unique story, to the message of overcoming obstacles and finding what’s important, to the comical comments of Ove and more.
My fave quotes:
“You’re the strangest superhero I ever heard about”
“We can busy ourselves with living or dying, but we have to move on.”
“People said Ove saw the world in black and white. But she was color. All the color he had.”

FINE I READ IT. AND FINE I LOVED IT JUST LIKE EVERYONE SAID I WOULD. But I resent all the ugly crying I’ve been doing. Sure, sure anyone can write sad stories that make people cry, but the ones where the goodness of humanity reduces me to a gross mucusy blob are impressive.
I resisted reading this because I don’t like reading translations, since how can an authors real word choice be reflected (and therefore be authentic) in a translation? But I was wrong, like I mostly always am about these kin ...more

“Death is a strange thing. People live their whole lives as if it does not exist, and yet it's often one of the great motivations for the living. Some of us, in time, become so conscious of it that we live harder, more obstinately, with more fury. Some need its constant presence to even be aware of its antithesis. Others become so preoccupied with it that they go into the waiting room long before it has announced its arrival. We fear it, yet most of us fear more than anything that it may take ...more

This book was completely uplifting. It has made me take a second look at how I view people around me. Because it did this to me, I especially loved it. Its not a fast read, nor an extremely exciting read; however, it is deeply moving. And I find myself wondering how many Ove's there are in my life that I don't really know.

I have to admit I wasn't too interested as I started the book but I loved the message of the book. The characters are so memorable. Ova is grumpy, likes rules and routines but is honest and forthright. I loved him by the end of the book. Great story about just being kind to those around us. You never know what one has gone through, and what you may go through. (Ove reminds me of someone I know :)

I just couldn't get into this book. I did the audio version, and the narrator was amazing! Even with that, the language was a turn off for me. And the book felt heavy. Maybe I just need something more light and fluffy at this time.
