What a delightful book! Ove is a curmudgeon through and through, and all of us (at least over a certain age) can identify with his grumbles and gripes and irritations. I enjoyed seeing Ove unbend and open up in spite of himself. Cried at the end, and was glad I wasn't reading it in public. ...more

My teenage son gave me this book for Christmas, not knowing it had been on my to-read list forever. He said he just thought I would like it. Apparently he knows good literature better than I thought he did. Maybe I did something right as a mother after all. I loved this book even more than I thought I would, which is saying something. You know how you get these expectations in your head based on friends' recommendations and Goodreads reviews? And then you end up being let down when you actually ...more

Meet Ove, a crusty yet also charming old man, who finds purpose in life when he is helping others. There is a bit of swearing, but overall I really enjoyed the story.

4.5 Stars.
At first I thought this book seemed slow. I was questioning why everyone enjoyed this book about a suicidal old man. After chapter five I was hooked. I loved the memories and flashbacks to how he became who he was.
It was a good reminder to not judge somebody, because you don't know their story. It's also a good reminder how much you touch other people's lives without realizing it. It was beautiful.

**There is lots of language and suicide attempts.

Ove has easily become one of my favorite literary characters ever. So charming and delightful.

PRONOUNCED “Ooo-Vuh”. There, now you know so you can stop mispronouncing it! 😂 Don’t worry, I started by reading it on my own, then switched to the audiobook to find I’d been mispronouncing his name the entire first half of the book. 🙄🤪

This book gave me all the feels. Many “awe” moments of just pure tenderness toward Ove, who is just very misunderstood. The way he interacts with the cat, The “Foreigner”, the “bender”, and his wife are just so fascinating. This grumpy curmudgeon man- was lonely.
