This is my third time reading something by Mrs. McKinley, and I admit that I should have read this book before Sunshine and Outlaws of Sherwood. People are not wrong by saying that she gives the best straight-fowarded updated retelling of Beauty in the Beast.

If you are looking of a version of the tale where Belle and the Beast actually have moments outside of their dinner arrangements, and actually say things besides 'Beauty will you marry me?' 'No, Beast'. Then you need to read this story.

I really enjoyed this retelling of Beauty and the Beast. I thought the author did a great job with the writing. I really liked how there was an enchantment over the castle but that it wasn't the Disney version of the story where inanimate objects talked. I thought the ending was very rushed to the happy ending....I would have liked a little more detail and a little more of the story.....(view spoiler) ...more

I love Robin McKinley, and enjoyed this retelling of Beauty and the Beast. It's a pretty authentic retelling of the original story, so if you want a more traditional flavor, this is it, although there are a few twists with more context on Beauty's family. An excellent book for a high school daughter! ...more

I liked the retelling of a classic. It took a little while to get the actual story going. And the ending was way too abrupt!

I read this again today - it's been years! This is a wonderful re-telling of Beauty and the Beast. It's a quick read and easier as well - good for age 10 and up I'd say, but definitely not juvenile, so it's completely enjoyable for an adult. "Beauty" is romantic, but not overly so, and has an independent and adventurous spirit to its pages. Though it's a classic fairy tale, McKinley gives it new life and a unique magic. I'm even convinced that some of Disney's interpretations came from this well ...more
