I read this one with my kids and my son especially was completely enthralled! This boy was about my son's age (12) when he was left alone in the Canadian wilderness to fend for himself after a plane crash.
I loved the way Brian used his abilities to figure out how to survive and how he learned from his mistakes, constantly becoming better. I can't even imagine the fear, despair, hope, and hunger that he felt and I'm a lot older and more experienced in life.

I read this aloud with my 10 year old son. He loved it, which made me love it as well. He says he'd give it 4.5 stars because "it was great but had a few things that could change". A story of a young boy living on his own after an accident. He is creative and impressive - a character to love and root for. There were scenes of suspense that were surprisingly gripping for even an adult reader

Another book I had to re-read because I looked like an idiot in front of my students as we were discussing this in our class Book Club.
This book did not disappoint. It had action, adventure, survival, and a surprising amount of existential discovery and thinking. The main character's journey, as he comes to terms with what really matters and what his biggest asset really is, was quite powerful in this book. The only thing I would change would be the ending. I felt like the last 4 or 5 chapters w ...more

3.5 stars. Reading others' reviews, this seems like a book that either people hate because of its writing style or love because of memories of childhood reading. This was my first time reading it, so I felt no nostalgia. But at the same time, I didn't hate Hatchet at all. I can see the appeal to middle-grade readers especially, since it isn't very long and is full of adventurous survival events. My daughter hasn't read Hatchet yet and groans when it is mentioned; it was a very popular reading ch

This is a classic boys read. I remember reading it a long time ago and loved the story of survival. I read this out loud to my boys and didn't really enjoy doing so as it makes you story tell, but it seemed forced. For instance, Brian would remember "the secret" of his mother meeting another man, which his father didn't know about and the sentences would read like this: and then Brian would remember. Remember the secret. The secret. The secret. Secret. While I understand that type of writing hel

4.5 stars. Wow, I loved this book. I read it for 6th grade book club, and we are only supposed to read the assigned section each week. I couldn't put it down and read it all in one day. It will be interesting to see if any of the kids in my group had the same problem.
I love Newbery books, and this was no exception. It was well written, and full of life lessons. I felt like I was actually there. Any time an author can make me feel like that, coupled with the inability to put the book down, makes ...more
