I should have loved this book. It's full of nature, uplifting morals, humor and even possesses a touch of romance. But I just couldn't. Elnore Comstock is a twit! The intended similarities between this heroine and Anne of Green Gables are difficult to miss. The main difference being that Anne learns to find the good in others and accept and love people with all their faults and wrinkles. Elnore forces characters to reform before they truly deserve her affection. All the while, Elnore rides a ver ...more

This is one of the reasons I love Book Club! I doubt I would have picked up this book otherwise but I really liked it. Elnora is an amazing role model for young women - strong, determined, resourceful, confident, forgiving, and kind. I enjoyed reading her story and watching her grow. Also loved the descriptions of her surroundings and the people she associated with. Great book!

I loved this book! It is a story of a girl who has no family except a mother who doesn't care about her at all. She overcomes so many difficulties and becomes such an amazing woman! I love all of the descriptions of nature and the beauty that she finds there... Great classic! ...more

Wonderful! I loved the characters, the descriptions of the beautiful setting, and the plot. I only wish I would have read this sooner.

I really enjoyed this book. It reminded me of Anne of Green Gables (not quite as good -- A of GG is an all time favorite -- but it had a similar feel to it). It is was like eating a bowl of my favorite ice cream: sweet, indulgent & so delightful.

Turns out it is actually a sequel to a book called Freckles. I don't think you need to read the other one first, but it might be fun/helpful.

I couldn't put this book down! When someone recommended it for book club once I was not interested at all, it said it was about a girl that lived by a swamp and collected moths, but I found it to be so much more than that! It is a sweet story with great old fashioned morals. ...more

I am ashamed to say that I didn't like it more than I actually did. I don't know if it was because I had to start and stop it so many times, but I just had a hard time getting into the story and caring about moths. ...more

I love a good old-fashioned love story! It was too little too late, for my taste, however. :) But the rest of the story is wonderful--I love the characters.

Good in a traditional classical sort of way. An enjoyable story.
