I could have liked this book. The concept is genius! Reading characters out of books!!! But I can't like it. Why? It's obviously a YA and yet I lost count of the use of the d-word. (Still a bad word in my book). Its dark and twisted and scary. I wish it had a PG-13 on the cover. Why is there no rating placed on books?! Unfortunately, I found it in our elementary library. Am I a prude? I was pre-reading it for Sarah when she stole it and got ahead of me. By the time I got to the worst parts, she

I really enjoyed this book. It was quite different than what I had expected. It was a nice thick book that actually took me almost a week to read (since I only read when I'm feeding Peter), which was nice because all the other books I've read lately have only been a day or two.
But, back to the book. I haven't seen the movie, so had no expectations. But I loved that it was about people who passionately love books! :) I enjoyed the twists and turns (even if they were fairly predictable) and found ...more

This really didn't feel much like a children's book. The author clearly has a German background in fairy tales! I thought it was a dark scary tale. It kept me captivated and I loved all the words!! The power of language ties directly to books like Reading Lolita in Tehran, etc. For older children.

I might've liked it better if the magic was better defined, eh. I liked it better than her Dragon Rider or Thief Lord. Maybe I'm a little prejudiced since CF is foreign and her books have been translated from German.
Re-read thoughts
The ending was well-put-together, though the pacing throughout is rather slow. This might be because there are several pov characters, and we have to hear about where all of them are. Or maybe because good ideas are overused (e.g., show how many books there are in Ele ...more

This is now my favorite fantasy book. I read this in about a day and a half and it's got over 500 pages. I couldn't put it down.
One of my favorite things about the book are the quotes from other books at the beginning of each chapter. Also, the author really captured the heart of an avid reader in her descriptions of books and how they conjure up such strong feelings.

This book was pretty good. Funke has an interesting spin on the common fairytale. After reading it a second time, I think I actually like it a little better. The flow of words kind of bothered me before. But it never occurred to me that this was written in German and only translated into English. So that gives some explaination of why the words don't flow quite right. I really like the concept behind this story.

A clever adventure story with books as a backdrop. I loved that a protagonist was a young intelligent, well read girl. The character of Dustfinger was also a favorite. Hope it translates well on film. The cast sounds great. Brendan Fraser, Helen Mirren, Paul Bettany, Jim Broadbent, etc. After the holidays I will read the rest of the series.

It took me quite awhile to become attached to the characters. But in the end I didn't want to put it down. I thought it was very creative and inventive. I am more excited to read the second one so that I can continue the story. It is full of lots of fun and adventure.
