So many different opinions on this one... Personally, I loved it. I picked it up and started reading without any knowledge of the story/characters/theme/setting. I was confused at first, but the writing was great and really drew me in. Yes it is written for a younger audience so some elements are hashed out as in depth as adults might like, but I think its really well written for its target.

I guess the reason I liked it so much is because it helped me feel thankful for the freedoms that I enjoy

My kids and I read this book aloud. It is such a great book. The original dystopian novel. Jonas shows courage and determination to escape the sameness and the corrupt choices occurring in his community. MD, MK and I gave it 5 stars. CN gave it 4 stars.

I liked this book. A lot. It made me think, which I normally steer clear of. When I finished reading this at midnight, I could not fall asleep. I felt the ending was strong, and now I'm not sure I want to continue on. ...more

Easy read. Simple book. Ending left me hanging. I felt like there wasn't a resolution. But I loved the book and the idea of defying the superior power that rules a perfect society. ...more

Had to read this in Middle school, and decided to re-read it. Still a thought-provoking book, and one that lets the reader decide the meaning of the ending.

Realized when I started that I'd read this before. I think because there were no surprises I didn't enjoy it as much the second time. But it is an interesting story. Perhaps it makes me appreciate more my boys' rebelliousness and tendency to shirk rules...nah let's not go that far. ...more
