What Members Thought

This book was interesting to read and definitely thought provoking. My thoughts were equal to Jonas's when he first discovered color and then realized that life without them just wasn't "fair." As he explained what wasn't fair, I believe the truth to our purpose in this world was revealed. He said, "If everything's the same, then there aren't any choices! I want to wake up in the morning and decide things! A blue tunic, or a red one?"

I know. I'm supposed to give this 5 stars. But I am an adult who never read this in school. It was published after I graduated! So it read a little young. Jonas never quite became a real person with real emotion. I understand what it is trying to teach but I don't get why it is so emotional for people. It just never came alive for me.

Absolutely beautiful story. Everyone should read this book at least once in their life. While the human race has made and continues to make terrible mistakes, I would never wish a future of "Sameness" on my posterity. There is opposition in all things and you never truly experience the joys in life until you know what anguish, pain, and sorrow truly are. Living a life not feeling anything is not a life. I am grateful Lois Lowry had the courage to write this story.
