How did I miss this classic young adult novel? It's a tale of a future world where everything is the same, the weather, the landscape, even the colors. It's easier that way. At the age of 12 each youth is given his or her job for the rest of his life. At Jonas's 12th Celebration he is unsure of where he will be placed. He can see where many of his friends will fit in, but has no idea where he himself will find a fit. He and everyone else is shocked when he is passed over during the ceremony, onl ...more

I read this in one sitting. I couldn't put it down and I keep thinking about it. It did leave me with the feeling like I was only scratching the surface. I don't know if that is because it is a young person's book or because I just need to read it again to see more. Maybe a combination of both. I will keep it on my shelf and revisit it again some time and will one day have my children read it. Not for awhile though. The subject isn't something they are ready for yet. ...more

I have been meaning to read this book for a while now. I had always heard of it but never had any idea what it was about. It was interesting and very creative. It really made me appreciate the ways in which we are all different and for the agency that I have. The only downside was that the end didn't give me the closure I would have liked. I do recommend it as it is a quick easy read and gives you something to think about. ...more

I don't know how I missed reading this book. It seems that everyone I know read it long ago. It is the story of a society of sameness. Everyone does the same thing. There is no color, no love, no deep emotions. Jonas, is elected to be the receiver of memories. He receives memories from the giver and learns about joy and happiness, but also misery and pain. ...more

The best way I can describe this book is it reminds me of 1984 and Brave New World for 10-12 year-olds. I felt that it was very imaginative and commented on society, the human drive for perfection, and the human need for opposition. I wish that I would have known about it when I was 12.

I loved this book! I am just sad that I took so long to read it. It certainly gave me a great deal to think about and I now recommend it to young readers, about fifth grade and up. My hubby is currently reading it.
