This is the first book I have read by Sue Monk Kidd. I enjoyed her writing very much, which somehow surprised me (not sure why). I read it with my Book Club. I enjoyed the characters and the events they went through. I like the way it was written from the viewpoint of two very different women, who were very much the same. It was difficult to put down, even though it did end at a good time in the lives of the women. I hope to read more of Sue Monk Kidd's books.

Probably a 3.5. There were so many things I liked about this book, I loved that it was based on real women and that the author tried to put as much real information into it as possible and that she did a ton of research for the book. One thing I didn't like was that she didn't really intertwine the two stories very well. And she also didn't really make either of them very likable, they weren't unlikable I just never found myself rooting for either of them. It was a GREAT book club discussion, so

Harrowing but compelling story of two oppressed women during the time of American slavery. Obviously the oppression of the slave, Handful was the most evil and inescapable. The unrelenting misery and hopelessness of the story exhausted me but I loved learning about the life of Sarah Grimke. I had no idea she was a real figure in the abolitionist movement.

An interesting look inside the lives of two long-forgotten but groundbreaking women, Sarah and Angelina Grimke - radical abolitionists and champions of women's rights. Their story is interspersed with that of a fictional enslaved woman, Handful, who lives and works in their childhood home. It is well written and rich in historical detail. I will say that the plot really slowed down in the last third of the book, which read more like a biographical sketch than a story. This is almost certainly du

A story of an Abolitionist raised in the deep south and her slave that she was given as a child. Loosely based on a true individual it was interesting to see the world from the characters points of view.
Overall it was a good read though I marked it down because of "content". If you are looking for a clean read I recommend skipping pp242-243 -adds nothing to the story, she should have just edited that out. ...more

Maybe I'm a terrible person, but I could not get into this book. My favorite book about slavery on plantations I think is probably still The Healing by Jonathan Odell
