From slave to foretold, Maerad's story is amazing. She overcomes overwhelming odds and continually discovers more about her own power and future. Yet, she has everyday worries just like a normal person.

A sober and well written fantasy that reminded me of Tolkein a bit. I was a bit put off by some of the petulant outbursts by the main protagonist in the early chapters that sounded too much like a spoiled 20th century middle teen, but there are only a few of those and if you can get past them it's a good read. It was MUCH better than the much ballyhood but disappointing "Golden Compass".

I really liked this book- though it is a bit slow- i could not put it down. i loved the civilization that she created, cant wait so read the next 3 books-yikes
This is a good read. The story is good.
