Beautifully written, with enough books, letters, manuscripts, diaries, and libraries to thrill my little archivist's heart. This is basically a detective novel, a quest to work out first the identity of a mysterious woman and then her relationship with a poet whose work has formed, in different ways, the basis of the various characters' scholarly careers. The parallels between the 19th century story and the modern-day one are nicely understated, only slowly becoming clear, and all of the charact ...more

Does anyone else find epistolary novels (or parts of novels) difficult to read? If a letter is not written to me, apparently I will get distracted.
