Greatly enjoyed this book. Although I knew a bit about the war in Bosnia in the 1990s, I wasn't very familiar about the other settings in this book as the story followed a hagaddah on its journey through hundreds of years. Because there were so many changes in setting and character, sometimes I got a little confused, but losing a few details didn't hurt my enjoyment of the story. Brooks is a terrific, imaginative writer. When she wrote about the 'history' of the Sarajevo Haggadah, she was at the top of her game. The love story involving the conservator and the museum director--eh, not so much. Don't let that detract you from diving into this remarkable story.

I probably wouldn't have liked this so much if I wasn't an archivist by trade. The story wasn't that compelling, but I loved the talk of her conservation work and her historical research.
